My favorite store in Ann Arbor is called Ten Thousand Villages in part because it is unlike any store I have ever experienced. This is what they say on their website to explain their philosophy. "At Ten Thousand Villages, we work with over 120 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring you fair trade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more. As one of the world's oldest and largest fair trade organizations, we build long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life." The store is just full of amazing and interesting things from all over the world, and I love to go there and just browse. My mom just bought this beautiful bag for me from Ten Thousand Villages. It was made in Vietnam and is made with a kind of satin with stunning embroidery. You can check the website www.tenthousandvillages.com to shop online or find a store near you. Sadly, there aren't any in Montana, but I did find one in Boise and one in Knoxville. The stores are staffed by volunteers, so the overhead is very low, and the artisans make a better wage.
